 Protocol-Independent Multicast  is the abbrevation of PIM


 Four variants of PIM are present


 PIM Sparse Mode


 PIM Dense Mode


 Bidirectional PIM


 PIM Source-Specific Multicast



 PIM does not include its own topology discovery mechanism


  PIM uses routing information supplied by other routing protocols.
 

  PIM-SM is commonly used in IPTV systems  for routing multicast streams between VLANs, Subnets or local area networks.
